The United Nations Association of the United States (UNA-USA) is an independent, nonprofit, nonpartisan organization. It seeks to stimulate public support of constructive U.S. policies in the UN and to improve the UN's effectiveness in dealing with global challenges.

UNA-USA provides American citizens with factual information about the UN and its activities through its many research, education, and civic actions programs. UNA-USA is supported entirely by membership dues, sales of publications, and individual and corporate contributions. Members of UNA-USA receive The Independent, its world affairs magazine, and membership in one of its regional organizations around the U.S., e.g., the UNA-SA.

WHAT WE ARE

UNA-Southern Arizona (UNA-SA) is a chapter of the UNA-USA which shares the beliefs and objectives of the UN: the people of the world deserve food, shelter, and health care; peace and security; and freedom, justice, and dignity. UNA-SA members believe the UN and its global cooperation offer the best opportunity to meet these needs and aspirations.

WHO WE ARE

UNA-SA is your neighbors, concerned citizens of southern Arizona of all walks of life, ages, races, and religions who come together to consider and confront perplexing international problems by acting as individuals and urging their government to act. UNA-SA members believe action starts at home, though, contributing at a grass roots level to a strong UN commitment to multilateral action against international challenges.

WHAT WE DO

UNA-SA sponsors a wide range of programs - breakfast, dinner, and lunch presentations; discussion panels and seminars; and entertainment - designed to increase understanding of global cultures and challenges and to support constructive U.S. foreign policies.

UNA-SA schedules speakers throughout the year to provide insights on important issues and its annual celebration of the anniversary of the founding of the UN in 1945 encourages community-wide involvement. UNA-SA conducts special programming with groups such as the League of Women Voters, Tucson Great Decisions, and Tucson Committee on Foreign Relations.

UNA-SA operates the UN Center/UNICEF in Monterey Village, Speedway and Wilmot, in Tucson. Volunteers sell carefully selected clothing, jewelry, and other arts and crafts from around the world. A significant portion of the Center's proceeds supports UNICEF, the UN's long standing, nonpolitical humanitarian agency which focuses on the world's needy mothers and children.

UNA-SA also works directly with teachers and schools to provide educational materials and UN publications from the Center's free lending library to increase their understanding of contemporary international challenges.

UNA-SA sponsors scholarships for students studying international relations at the University of Arizona and a special grant program for the study of specific UN-related issues. UNA-SA also supports the Arizona Model United Nations program which has drawn thousands of college and secondary students for more than a quarter of a century to the University for an annual simulated session of seven UN deliberative bodies. Financial assistance is also provided to the UA delegation to the Far West Model United Nations.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE

Join the UNA-SA and, by extension, you are automatically a member of the UNA-USA, too. You'll receive The Independent, the optional opportunity to register for various UNA-USA research and email newsletters, and information about UNA-SA educational, entertainment, and UN Center/UNICEF activities in southern Arizona. Perhaps most important, you'll have opportunities to make new friends among your fellow southern Arizonans who are similarly committed to a better world!
